What Can We Do Now?

We’ve covered a lot of ground, and you probably have ideas of your own for what we can do to make things better. I have a few thoughts, so this is where you get to read what I think we can do. We’re now in the final chapter, and although it is a bit of a list, hopefully, you will be inspired to improve how you interact with patterns and processes at the conclusion.

The following sections will suggest you:

  • Concentrate on pattern languages, not patterns.
  • Learn to recognise patterns better.
  • Ensure you understand the criteria for a pattern.
  • Question the existing patterns.
  • Gain and train your discernment skills.
  • Look for patterns in unexpected places.
  • Always consider systems theory.
  • Take lessons from the history of design patterns.
  • Move away from adding, and attempt to unfold your designs.
  • Name patterns better.
  • Learn to write well.
  • Learn to elicit the deeper needs of the client.
